Love new writing? Love East London? Join Script Read East for a unique evening of comedy, music and of course drama.

We showcase work in progress from London’s hottest, home-grown new writers. Our panel carefully select the brightest two scripts from a round of submissions to be performed – script in hand – by our pool of talented local actors for your Sunday afternoon entertainment. Be involved in emerging talent – watch as scripts are brought to life, give your opinion on new work and network with some of the bright young things of the film and theatre world.

This September, we’re back with an afternoon of new writing that we’re ominously calling ‘Ladykillers’. Heading up the event is Chukwudi Onwere’s black comedy Hit Chicks, following contracted killers, Alesha – who has trouble staying out of her targets’ beds – and her critical older sister, Leticia. The two run into trouble when they receive a cryptic package from the mysterious ‘M’.

Keeping the laughs coming like sticky sweet black treacle – we’ll be reading Christopher Jefferies’ Escape from Squalor. After his physical theatre adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream bombs at the box office, down and out theatre director, David, returns home from B & Q with a step ladder and length of rope and contemplates life, death and plan B.

And to keep it all flowing we will have stand up comedian Luke Stephen  and a live acoustic set from local  Joe Innes to add tunes to words!

Ready to Read? Or perhaps tread the boards? We’ll read scripts of any genre or medium – screen, stage, radio, romance, comedy, tragedy, thought-provoking, tear-jerking or laugh out loud … our only rule is that it is completely fresh and hasn’t been produced before. Drop us a line…

‘Ladykillers’ ScriptReadEast – this Sunday @ Rich Mix

Sept 28th 2014 Flyer ver3,1-2

THE SRE TEAM: ANNA LINES

Anna Lines is a scriptwriter from Ladbroke Grove who helped to start and run the very successful ‘Off The Grove’ scriptwriter’s showcase in the 1990’s – one of the first of its kind in the UK. With sparkling new writing attracting established actors like Lenny James, Frances Barber and Rhys Ifans, OTG drew a loyal following for new talent and soon established itself as one of the most important nights out on the TV and film industry calendar.

Anna jumped at the opportunity to repeat similar success when she helped to found ScriptRead East with her long time friend Sophie Critchlow. Sophie had the original idea of starting a scriptwriter’s showcase in Hackney for new and unknown scriptwriters in TV, film and theatre. At the very successful inaugural SRE event, Anna’s 10 minute comedy short ‘#Hackgate – Solid Gold’ was one of three scripts read. Anna is currently adapting an online novel to screenplay.’

THE SRE TEAM: FOUNDER/DIRECTOR

SOPHIE CRITCHLOW – FOUNDER/DIRECTOR

After completing a film degree at London College of Printing Sophie enjoyed a stint of low budget filmmaking, producing a few short films and and some time at the BBC New Writers room and CBBC Sitcom Kerching.

Having always loved writing, she left film school frustrated at not having had any screenwriting sessions which led her to take on a screenwriting course at City Lit with the about to be famous Sam Bain.

Having attended and been inspired by ‘Off the Grove’ in the 90’s, Sophie wanted to recreate the format of ‘Off the Grove’ and provide a platform for new writers to develop their work as well as developing her own scripts. Getting back in touch with old school mate Anna Lines, ScriptReadEast was born in 2011.

Since then it has grown and polished the rougher edges, although Sophie has yet to submit her own work…yet!

A THANK YOU FROM APRIL…

DSC_0018-

If you were unfortunate enough to miss April’s event (you poor thing) you missed out on laughter, tears and some of the freshest writing talent in East London…

First and foremost, we want to give a big hand to our compere, the fabulous Mr Blair, for giving us a giggle and raise a glass to Sophie Burrows who left us speechless with a sweet acoustic set.

Whenever we receive new script submissions, we’re always looking for something fresh, inspiring and witty but most of all a story that whips us up into the nitty-gritty of its characters, which is exactly what these two ladies managed to do…

First up, was Fiona O’Malley’s Goodbye Mrs Robinson, a twisted tale that hailed to the black comedy talents of writer/director Martin Mcdonagh. Following orphaned brother and sister Connor and Aoife trying to claim money from their foster mother’s life insurance and break free of the miserable memories of Mrs Robinson.

We polished off the afternoon with Melody Schroeder’s The Lock-In, which followed tough guy Dean and history teacher Luke after a pub brawl. Schroeder’s way with words had our audience gripped and we bet none of you saw that plot twist coming…

As always a huge thank you to all of those whose efforts went into the event – including our ever-talented troupe of actors, our guest writers and the staff at Rich Mix. Keep your eyes peeled for our next event…

This month to celebrate emerging women writers we introduce Fiona O’Malley’s play ‘Goodbye Mrs Robinson’, ‘a black comedy set in Galway, Ireland. Orphaned Brother and sister Connor and Aoife find themselves engulfed in a twisted plot to claim money from their foster mother’s life insurance. Can they break free from the harsh memories of Mrs Robinson?’

The darkness continues with ‘The Lock In’ by Melody Schroeder. ‘Strangers Luke and tough guy Dean are trapped in a pub waiting for the police following a fight, with each other. Is the contempt they hold for each other the real battle, or does it lie somewhere deeper?’

The event will be hosted by comedian/funny man Mr Blair and we are delighted to have a live acoustic set from singer/songwriter Sophie Burrows.
